Η οικογένεια των Φωκιδών διαιρείται σε δύο υποοικογένειες: στις Φωκίνες και στις Μοναχίνες.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι όλα τα πτερυγιόποδα, θηλαστικά προσαρμοσμένα πολύ στη ζωή στο νερό, μπορούν να ονομαστούν φώκιες, οι αληθινές φώκιες, γνωστές αλλιώς και σαν άωτες, ανήκε, στην οικογένεια των φωκιδών. Οι φώκιες δεν έχουν εξωτερικά αφτιά. Δεν μπορούν επίσης να κατευθύνουν τα πίσω πτερύγιά τους προς τα εμπρός, κάτω από το σώμα τους και το τρίχωμά τους αποτελείται κυρίως από μεγάλες τρίχες. Η ταξινόμηση των ζώων που ανήκουν στις γνήσιες φώκιες, συμπίπτει σχεδόν με τη φυσική τους διαίρεση σε φώκιες του βορείου και του νοτίου ημισφαιρίου.
